new guy needs transmission help

I have a 95 Z28 with an auto trans,I built my engine up to 651hp and ran out of cash 2 get built trans.I know dont have over drive and its slipping fairly bad I found a manual trans in the junkyard for a 95 v6 I wanted to buy a new flexplate and clutch kit up to the task and use the manual trans from the RS but dont know if it will bolt to my pressure plate,I have a repair manual that says gm used three transmissions in the 93-97 f-bodies,a 5-spd and two different 6-spd transmissions.in the manual they are all interchangeable.I wanted to ask if anyone else has put a V-6 manual transmission in a V-8,and if they had problems what they were.please help.I dont have much cash and am hoping this will work atleast untill I can buy the proper transmission.

Re: new guy needs transmission help

The V6 cars came with the Borg-Warner/Tremec T-5 trans. It does not fit the LT1 V8. Even if it did, it is so weak it would not last behind your engine. The LT1 V8/T56 combo uses a unique "pullback" clutch design. The V6/T-5 uses a conventional "pusher" design.

There are three versions of the T56 used with the LT1. You want a 94 or newer version, because they have the highest torque capacity. See this chart:

4_3

The T56 used with the LS1 engines has a different bell housing, a longer input shaft and a conventional pusher clutch. Not going to work without some parts swaps.

Re: new guy needs transmission help

Building up a LT1 is never cheap. With that amount of horsepower, i hope your still not using the original rear end, cause these engines can tear it to shreds with anything over 500.
Here is my 2 cents... Your gonna run out of money trying to convert your auto V8 into a manual trans. There are lots of parts that need to be fit to auto cars that its just not worth it. The 4L60E transmission (which is a 4 speed with overdrive) is actually a pretty tough bird. Im going to guess the reason its slipping is because of fluid level. You cannot check transmission fluid level with the car off like you would engine oil. Then engine must be running and in park or nuetral. Then check it. Add fluid accordingly.
For relatively low money, you can toughen up that 4L60E transmission to handle more horsepower. (i say relatively low because ive seen what some REAL transmissions cost). I think ive seen some 800+hp LS engines with a built auto behind them with no problems.
I know theres a "cool" factor to having a manual tranmission, but autos are cool in their own right. If anyone gives ya crap about it, just remember that 9/10 weekend warriors cannot shift faster then a computer.
