need help fixing my ac

i tried to turn it on yesterday, and it wouldnt work. so i just figured maybe it needed some new 134a. so i did what the can told me to do, and when i intially hooked it up,it said 60 psi of pressure in there. which is way to high according to the an. it should have been around 35-45 psi. so i then unhooked it and started the car up,and turned on the ac, to make sure the compressor was running, and it runs constantly no problems that i can tell, and i then rehooked the coupler, and the gauge wouldnt come off of 0. so i then squeezed the trigger, and it seemed like nothing would go in, after approx 1 min. worth the gauge is still at 0. however i didnt see any noticeable leaks anywhere, but why would it be at 60 psi intially and drop to 0 like that? and how can go about finding a leak, or what am i doing wrong? this is the first time i have tried putting freon in a ac system, please excuse my ignorance. thanks alot.

With the car off and compressor not running you're reading the "static" pressure, which will be higher until the compressor is running. Both high and low side should be equalized and read the same. Outside ambient temperature also makes a difference in static pressure, higher the temp, higher the pressure. Chart in my helms says above 60*/50 psi, above 75*/60 psi, above 90*/100 psi. Static pressure test is to ensure there's enough minimum refrigerant in the system to start charging according to my helms. Hope this helps.
