Need advice on my future purchase!

All, First off hello everyone, I am new.

Ok here is the deal. right now I am trying to decide whether to buy a Mustang 89-95 5.0 or a 89-96 Camaro (trying to spend no more than 8k). I am leaning towards the Camaro but I could use any advice you have.

1. What is the difference between the 305 TBI and the 350 TPI? Is it really that big of a difference where I should only be looking at the 350 or can I easily "bolt on" HP to the 305?

2. Why is it that I see so many automatic transmissions on the Camaro's? Is it just luck? I would prefer manual.

3. Is it more advisable to go with a 4th gen Camaro then a 3rd gen Camaro?

4. How much faster is a 305 or 350 when compared to a comparable Mustang 5.0?

Any help is GREATLY appreciated as I am new to all this.

Thanks Again!

Re: Need advice on my future purchase!

1)The T.B.I. motors have around 170HP. T.P.I. 305 auto. has around 190HP most years (5-speed is 220hp) and T.P.I.350 has 225-245HP. I would atleast get a 305 T.P.I.
2)The automatic was the only choice for the 350. I only see auto. around here too.
3)Your choice.
4)a 350TPI or 305TPI 5-speed is right there w/Mustang. A stock auto.TBI is like 0-60 in 9 seconds so they are not. And the L98 top speed is 145-150. I think the same top speed for all TPI motors. I only saw one article (Hot Rod mag.)say the 350 was 155.

So from my research they never made a manual 5.7 liter 89-92? Wouldn't it be advisable to just buy a 5.0 TPI manual then?

Thanks Again!

The 5.7L was only mated with an automatic tranny. One of the perks though with the 5.0L TPI w/ the T-5 manual tranny was that it had a slightly more aggressive cam over so it made power close to that of the 5.7L.

So is it more advisable to go with the 5.7 or 5.0? I always thought cars were faster with a manual?

89-92 camaro tpi l98 (350) 245hp/330-340tq? the tpi 5.0 (305) make 225-235 for those years dont know the torqe nums but i think is 290 lothe tbi (305) 180-190hp for those years 220tq. the l98 comes only with an auto
the tpi 5.0 has 230-235 hp and can hav a stick
89-93 mustangs 5.0 makes 225hp

the l98 & will beat
the tpi 5.0 will be a close race

The only 5.0TPI auto engine with 215HP was the 1985. It had the same cam as the 305 TPI 5-speed. Check out this link. It should tell you a lot of good info. Notice the '87 L98 350 like mine has peak torque at 2800 instead of 3200 in the later years. http://www.iroc-ss.com/history.htm
