Motor build or rear end/tranny first?

Down the road I plan on building a 396 for my car. If you all were to do this (or those who have already built a motor) would you build the motor, then run your tranny/rear till they die? Or should I get my tranny rebuilt to handle it and get a 12 bolt first? From what I've read the 10 bolts are hit or miss, and the tranny doesn't have much in it for too much over stock HP/TQ.

Thanks
Jared

Personally, I would probably upgrade the other stuff first before the motor. It would be a shame to build up a monster 396 just to have the car sitting because you chewed up your tranny and blew the rearend.

We have seen many customers build their engines and connect them to stock drivetrains. If you are a little easier on the parts and keep in mind the 10 bolt is not a 9" or 12 bolt you should be ok.

Wait and do it all at the same time. That way your car would be in the garage once.

I don't know about an auto but a 6 speed with DR would break the stock rear with a clutch dump. If you put on ET streets or drag tires I imagine that 396 will turn the stock 10 gears to shards of metal. Its a good idea to build up the trans and put a performance stall converter on.

just remember like anything if you know it will break its best to build it up before it does cause if it does break its possible to damage the piece beyond repair.

Keep in mind as you are putting in bulletproof drivetrain parts you can still drive and have fun with the car. I have a stock internal bolt on LT1 in my 94Z. The tranny is a Rossler TH400 with a 4K stall and a Tbrake. I am buying a Strange S60 with a spool in the next couple of weeks. Then I will build the monster motor for it. I can then hammer on it without worry.
