maybe another dumb intake question

i recently put on a cool air intake kit. question is do i leave it hanging there inside that "box" of plastic and such that the old air box used to be above, the one right by the fender, or can i remove that plastic material stuff so the filter is literally exposed to the open air, i feel like more power would be gained that way. what has everyone else done with theirs? thanks in advance

I do not understand what plastic stuff you are talking about.

I'm not sure exactly what you're talking about but if you mean leaving it exposed to open air down below out of the engine compartment in front of the tire I'd be wary. It would be pretty easy for it to suck up water or be hit and cut open by road debris.

I agree, I would leave it in place.

I've seen people take the "cover" off or even try to do a "ram air" thing adding a scoop down there. But same people complain about getting the filter wet in bad puddles. To compromise, yoiu could drill holes in the plastic bottom part.

I notice on mine that the cover's there, but this is a slight opening...about 1/4" wide and about 6" long.

well my cover thingy that was directly below the cone filter had slits in it but were facing opposite direction of the blowing air when moving forward, dont know if those were to help air intake but its how it came from the factory but i removed that whole piece and notice a difference on highway speeds now
