All are about the same as far as reliability, don't believe a lot of the negativity about the 98s. My 98 SS was a great car, still miss it.
Condition is everything. My 98Z is a good car, but it is not in as good an overall condition even though it had under 20k when I bought it. The SS had 47k on it when I bought it. Reason: the SS came from an adult owner who didn't pound on it at evey corner. Z was a former company car. But for 8k, I thought what the hey.
things to look for on all years: excess oil use, loud piston slap (a little is ok), window motors, lazy clutch hydraulics. Diff leaks, a little is not out of line, but watch out for one thats really dripping.

Piston slap is ok just make sure its not there at warm up, make sure all the cluster lights work, some people remove cluster bulbs when their car throws a code so make sure SES, service vehicle, abs and check gauges lights come on. Check fluids, look under the car for heavy corrosion and leaks good luck.

The stock clutch in the '01 and '02 M6 cars is the same clutch used in the C5 Z06. It's pretty good. Nothing wrong with a stock replacement, especially at stock power levels.
There are a couple good brands for aftermarket clutches. McLeod seems to be the favorite.

Really can't go wrong with any of the years, they are very stout cars and eliminate some of the pitfalls that the 93-97s suffered from. Just examine all the fluids really well, listen for abnormal noises, and inspect the chassis for any damage.
