lt1 or ls1 looking to beat mustangs
here's what most LS1 guys won't tell you about LT1's: you can get them for about 4 grand. after that, a good cold air intake, exhaust and port and polish job gets you 400-420 hp (as quoted from the jan issue of car craft). now you add a nice cam, find an LS1 driveshaft, scrap the 4l60e and get a 700r4 if you go auto, 58 mm throttlebody and airfoil and you have one hell of a street car. there's more you can also do if you like if you want to go extreme.
^^^^I agree with the above.
The car in my sig I have a total invested of under $3500 including cost of the car. It WILL be in the 12s next trip to the track, and of course with a little spray, I think you can go deep 11s with under $5k total invested.
That isn't to say that the rearend isn't going to go, or the u-joints etc, so $1k for the N2O and $500 set aside for a donor 10-bolt (no $ for 12-bolt or 9"), and there you have it. The deals are out there, just be patient.

Hey man
If you have the money you could go for the ls1..... More power to begin with, and they respond better to mods, as stated before. Might try one with fewer miles though, especially if you plan on modding it extensively.
The LT1 is certainly no slouch, even stock. With a few mods they can haul *** too, trust me on this
And they are cheaper to buy, and cheaper on insurance because there older. Some of the mods are cheaper as well but not all.
A good first 'mod' for whatever you choose is a good old fashioned tune-up. If its been a while, or its on original parts, you'd be supprised at what a good tune up will do for the performance of it + gas mileage also.
Please dont take offense, iam not gonna tell you not to street race, because I did it when i was younger.
All iam gonna say is be carefull if you must. We dont need anymore bad publicity for our favorite hobby caused by street racing accidents. There are drag strips around, you just gotta look for them.
You say your new to this- make sure you take the time to get used to whatever you buy before you go puttin' the hammer down. These cars can get away from ya real quick if your not used to the power or are not paying attention.
Goodluck in whatever you decide to do!
P.S.-my catback-only, 94 camaro with the lt1 and auto had no problem beating most mustang GT's up untill the new retro looking ones came out.

there a few problems with the opti in lt-1 out of a hundred thousand cars a handfull have trouble, my opti seemed to be going but when i replaced the blown head gaskets and adjusted the valves it ran fine, most people as stated many times blame the opti when there is no problem
