The low coolant light comes on after a few minutes. I check the coolant and it is ok. Has anyone else had this.

 

Common problem. You can replace it or unplug it. Unplugging it will not set any codes or lights, but you should check the coolant weekly.

 

A search would indicate that it is extremely common.

Unplug it an no code you say? I did this and have had the code p1661 every since............ I do check my fluid levels often, always have on all my cars but this code may pop up for you.... I have this issue on my 98 SS......

The original poster has a 97. In the LT1 cars the coolant level sensor is not connected to the PCM, so there's no way to set a code. Its simply a switch that connects to the light on the dash. Your 98 may be different, but I doubt it.

P1661 indicates a faulty SES light circuit. It has nothing to do with the coolant level switch.

 

unplugged mine, it's better than the light on the dash. I check the coolant level about once a week.
