left blinker problems

My friends girlfriend asked me to take a look at her 97 firebird this saturday.
she said that the left blinker just stays on. I assumed that it was the flasher.
but she said here brother tried cleaning out the light socket and it fixed it for a few minutes?

weird. anyway. anybody ever have any weird blinker problems like this with F-body's
by the way, where is the flasher?

Re: left blinker problems

Both turn signals use the same flasher so if the other side works, its's not the flasher. Sounds like a corroded light socket/bulb.

Mine was just like that the other day. The rear bulb was just burned out. It is really easy to get to the rear bulbs... The front are slightly tougher.

Re: left blinker problems

Funny story.
So I'm sitting at a light to make a left in the turn lane and put my left blinker on. It didn't come on. Then I'm thinking, whats that smell? A wisp of smoke comes up out of the steering column and I think, I should of invested in a fire extinguisher. Blinkers stop working altogether. I get home later that night and start pulling the steering column apart. BTW if you do it too, you'll need a lock plate depressor, a bolt-type puller and snap ring pliers come in handy. Anyway, I get everything apart and all seems to be in order. Strange. I wiped some of the grease off of the contacts because there seemed to be too much. After putting it all back together, everything works, except that sometimes the left front blinker will stay on constant (no flashing) after the cancel cam brings the arm back. I also forgot to mention that the hazards worked fine even when the turn signals didn't. Just one of the few strange things that happened in my steering column following an airbag deployment a few years back.

Re: left blinker problems

The signals and emergencies are on separate flashers. I have this problem right now only it's on the right side and intermittent. It appears to be the right rear indicator light/socket/wires.
The flashers are buried up under the dash.

Re: left blinker problems

Yep, I've had a problem like that. It's all the crap in the socket, creates a horrible electrical connection. If you take the bulb out, put it back, it might work for a few hours, until it moves a bit and the connection goes to crap again.

You can try cleaning everything.... or do what I do.. Use a knife and just lift the little wires on the bulb a bit so they connect better.
