knock sensor
Where is it? I have a 96 Z28
next question what will happen if i unplug the sensor? what will the car default to?
i have a nasty ticking noise that when at idle and vehicle in netural the timing is retarded 15*. and when i rev to around 1500-2000 rpm it gets retarded even further i saw it peak at 47*!
I figure it is the ticking causing it to pick up a false knock as i have heard of headers doing the same.
I think the ticking noise is my water pump / bearing / something under timing cover area. and im not worried about it as im about to replace that stuff. but i was currious if i unplug the knock sensor if it will retard the timing or if it will advance it closer to where it should be.

The sensor is here.
I think you might be mistaken about the timing. It sounds like you are looking at actual timing (which on some scanners is shown as minus degrees (-°) and it should be, because it is always BTDC. If this is the case, you don't really have a problem there.
If you unplug the sensor, you will get a trouble code and the timing will be retarded by maybe 10° or so. That would make any timing problem you have even worse.

ok well it is reading -x* so this is correct then?
what about the -47* i was getting at RPM? still accepable? what kinda range should i be seeing?
