Here's a thread on some tips I recommend doing after I dropped mine. Also pics included.
As far as time, took about 4-5 hours to drop everything..only cause I didn't know how far I needed to drop the rear...to just drop it as far as whats in the pics it sould have only taken about 3 hours, pull pump out . install new one and glue up the bucket..let sit over night, then another 2-3 hours to get back together.
The extra time is worth it to do it right IMO and its not that difficult if you can get the car high enough safely.

Who said cutting the hole is wrong? I've heard of other cars that have fuel pump access panels, why not "fix" what GM forgot to do? Mine is sealed up nicely again with metal stock, a gasket, and a good # of screws holding it in.

If you do drop it, make sure everything works right before putting it all back together, ie, the level sender, etc.. you're not gonna wanna do it twice!

According to NHRA isn't that altering the firewall of the vehicle? I know that I don't want to put a fire supression system in my car unless I have to.

Dropping the tank wasn't too bad, but you will need to get everything out and the rear up high. I had to bend the filler neck a little, even with everything out, but then it came just fine.

Don't believe so.. the passage is still blocked off. My friend's car is a 9 second NHRA certified car with the same cutout panel. He has no interior so it's not hidden.

Hmmm, Ok. I guess it would depend on the interpretation of the rule.

do a search for changing the fuel pump. cutting the whole on top is easy as hell...Pulling the tank is a PITA. I would do the hole cutting anyday. and when its sealed off with a plate and bolts...I dont consider it a hazard
