Inspection done on a 00' SS... Your opinions?

Thinking about buying this SS but wanted to get it checked out first, two things came back.. What do you guys think, is this a bad problem? (Car only has 28,500 miles)

MILD REAR END NOISE.

REAR DIFFERENTIAL LEAK STAIN AND REAR END MAKES
NOISE, CHANGES ON ACEL AND DECEL.

rear diff fluid is low or has been changed, and maybe the additive for the limited slip was not put in.

at the best it needs a fluid/additive change, at worse the rear rebuilt for 5-600.

yeah, rear end rebuild should be a worst, but not too bad of a fix. i would say if the price of the car is right, than by all means go for it!

Final price would be $17,100.. Car is flawless inside and out, looks brand new.

I'd be wondering how the heck the rearend got to whining in the first place and being that it's pretty hard to mess up a rearend, what did the owner do and did he treat the rest of the car that way too... of course it could just be a defetive rearend, but I've never come across anyone with that. The absence of the additive would only affect LS performance, not the noise of the gears.

what are you talking about? You obviously havent been around fbodies very long because the stock rear ends are pieces of crap and are VERY VERY easy to break.

And the absense of additive WILL cause noise

Doesn't the SS model also have a HD carrier installed by SLP? I remember the cover is different and has cap supports?

His rear isn't broke, it's whining. I guess my f-bodies have all been special b/c I've ran no additive in them and never had any whining. So have many other people.

...and yes, although your social skills are severely lacking, you probably do have more experience with broken rear ends than me.

It doesn't look beat on at all, and this is his wife's car.

Well that's just strange then. Maybe it was just setup bad from the factory and she never noticed it. I wouldn't think anyone would service the rear end with only 28k miles on it, so the chances of someone leaving out the additive, even though I still don't think that would make it whine but giving Jason the benefit of the doubt, should be slim to none.

Maybe she slammed the clutch with each shift...

Well a properly setup, properly working rear end won't whine...so IMO it's certainly not normal, although I wouldn't exactly call it broken either.

If you have a standard factory issue posi rear in your 4th gen and never add any additive when you change the gear oil and it doesn't ever make noise, you either have a hearing impairment, or somehow you got one of the few magic rear ends that were blessed by god himself

wow, that was mature

All three of mine hade at some point has straight oil in them and have never whined. One 3.42, a 3.23 and 2.73, all with LS. Now it wasn't by choice it was left out - the LS each time would engage rough without it but no whine, and even thinking about it I can't imagine any manufacturer making a rear end so 'special' that it had to have additive to keep from whining. Maybe you're right, but it seems really odd.

And on the maturity thing, just fighting fire with fire.

Limited Slip Additive will not cause or diminish gear whine, bearing whine, or gear lash.

It is merely a conditioner for the fiber frictions discs that make up the "limited slip" differential.

If you don't put in the additive, some rear ends will exhibit "wheel hop" on cornering because the discs wont slip properly.

I dunno...I've had 3 4th gens. I only forgot limited slip aditive 1 time in my 95 Z28 and it whined like absolute hell and had horrible wheel hop. As soon as I added it it went away.
