When i first read this post i immediately thought this car has been beat on. If the rear end is whining its probably been beat on HARD. Most of us spin the tires and go WOT but not to many of us destroy a rear end or cause them to start whining under regular driving.

Re: Inspection done on a 00' SS... Your opinions?

i guess depends on how bad it is..

no matter what the shop did, they couoldn't completely get rid of the whine of my 3.73's around th 50 mph area on accel and deccel.. I've grown to live with it.

I'd be more worried if it sounds more like growling/grinding like the gates of hell opening up.

This is how I'd think about it:

You have two options:

Find out if it's just low on fluid and if so, does it quieten down when it's filled?

Buy it and expect the worst - like someone said, with labor probably about $400-600 to fix.

Personally, I'd tell whoever had it to service the rearend and get back with me. If it's your perfect car and you're risking losing it to another buyer, go for it. To me, it wouldn't be worth losing what I thought was a great car over something as simple as a rearend.

I'd check the oil/tranny fluids very closely though and also looking for any other leaks. Also check the rotors to see if they have any signs of worn out pad damage. I'd just be thinking 'bad maintenance' but I could be wrong.

Do you know for a fact that it has stock gears? Whine is very common with non stock gears.

Re: Inspection done on a 00' SS... Your opinions?

Here's another thought that just came to mind...

Almost all ring/pinion gears have a degree of whine from the gear mesh and gear lash. This whine is usually heard on decel and goes away with throttle. GM went to a heavy, steel driveshaft to absorb this noise. But then owners started complaining about driveshaft vibration. Dealerships received a bulletin from GM to correct vibration complaints by replacing the driveshaft with the aluminum one, but to be CERTAIN to inform the customer that a significant noise increase would be the tradeoff.

I installed the aluminum driveshaft in mine, just because it's lighter and I got 2 fresh u-joints! I can vouch for the increased rear end noise, although it was certainly quieter than my old 4.10 mustang!

If you bought the car, check the axle bearings, i just bought my 00 SS in dec with 56k on it, and it has 58K now, and the wheel bearings went bad, the axle on the one side is all chewed up where the bearing rides, i was totally baffled on how this would happen on such a low mile car, it was making tons of noise, in the dead of freezing winter it wasnt making as much noise

The price seems high. The mileage is very low, but I wouldn't pay that for a '00 SS. FWIW, I sold my '00 SS convertible, M6, for 18.500 with 30k... but that was 3 years ago.

At that price, sounds like a dealer. EVERYTHING should be operating perfectly, and some form of warranty should exist, at least for a few months.
