Improving Engine Fan Efficiency
Improving Engine Fan Efficiency
What's the best way to increase the effeciency of my engine fan? My car gets too hot sometimes during low speed driving and I'd like my fan to work sooner and faster. The sooner part would be a manual fan switch or something that makes the fans kick on sooner (I've seen those), but I want the fan itself to work better. I've heard of dual fans, more efficiently designed fans....What's better? Can I install an additional smaller fan someplace? Are dual fans better?

if you get too hot at slow speeds, check for debris in your radiator fins, and between the condesor and rad
Re: Improving Engine Fan Efficiency
Maybe they don't...I just assumed they did. I'll check those areas, it seems like it doesn't do as good of a job as it should, debris seems likely.
Re: Improving Engine Fan Efficiency
V6's only had one fan, V8s had 2. I'd get either a manual fan switch, or get your car tuned so the fans come on sooner. Theres not really any upgrades or anything that can be done.. what temp does the engine get to, exactly?
Re: Improving Engine Fan Efficiency
To be honest, I don't really know how to read that gauge so I can't tell you a good number, but it goes a little past 1 notch past the half way point. So to guess, I'd say it gets to 235*-245*. The fan does turn on, but I feel it doesn't get the temp down fast enough, or, it only keeps it from redlining at 260 for a while and then it slowly starts dropping to a acceptable temp (around 205*-215*).
So you would advise against me installing dual fans in place of my stock single?
I'm bringing this up because I'd like to fix this problem before I switch from 160* thermostat to 180* (160 makes me run rich) and I don't want to overheat or nearly overheat in traffic or low speed driving.

Re: Improving Engine Fan Efficiency
I wouldn't. To tell you the truth it doesn't sound like the fans are the problem.. when was the last coolant flush you had done? IT seems to be running ALITTLE warm, but our cars, especially my 3.4L V6 ran kind of hot.
Re: Improving Engine Fan Efficiency
I had a V6 fan on my Z28 that a previous owner installed... I had it wired to a manual switch and it kept my V8 cool(without A/C running)... Never got above 200 and stayed around 190 most times with a 180 thermostat... I installed dual fans this weekend and it keeps it somewhat cooler with both fans running, but the single fan should be enough for yours... Like said above, just have it programed to turn on at a cooler temp or do a manual switch.
