All F-Body (Camaro, Firebird) and Y-Body (Corvette) LT1's have aluminum heads. The B-Bodys (Caprice/SS/Roadmaster/Fleetwood) have cast iron heads.
The 97 has a 4L60E electronically controlled automatic trans, with a pulse width modulated converter lockup.
The automatics came with either 2.73 (RPO "GU2") gears in the base configuration, or with 3.23 (RPO "GU5") gears if the original buyer checked the "performance rear axle" option on the order form. Check the parts code tag in the glove box for those codes.
To run 10's it's possible to build a normally aspirated engine, which along with a good drivetrain, suspension and some weight reduction will get you into the high 10's. It's a lot easier to do it with a blower or nitrous. People have taken the LT1 into the low 8's.
