How to wash car cover?

Picked up a cover from a local board member. It's a little musty so I wanted to wash it. I'm not sure if I can just throw it in the washer or not though. The tag doesn't say and the business and phone # provided on the tag either no longer exist or have moved. It's a canvas cover on the outside with a fleece type material on the inside. What would be the best or atleast safest way to clean it? Thanks in advance.

I have a California Car Cover brand cover, dont remember which grade of their covers I have, but when I wash it I go to the local laundromat and use one of their big industrial size washers.

That's basically what I wanted to know. If I could put it in the washing machine. We have huge commercial washers at my work and I figured on just throwing it in there. Didn't want to ruin it though. Thanks

I'd try putting it on the car for a day or two and letting it air out a bit first and see if that does the trick. It wasn't too musty was it, or just a little smelly?

I doubt that washing it will hurt it any though. Just don't use a ton of soap, and since the machine are huge commercial ones you shouldn't have a problem.

Re: How to wash car cover?

Use a liquid soap, I washed one of mine using a powdered soap and it seemed that a lot of the soap never did disolve. From then on, every time I used the car cover, there was a white powder film all over my car. I even ran it through the rinse about 2-3 more times and I still had the problem. I don't know if the soap got into the pours of the cloth or what but I finally bought a new cover.

Nah it wasn't too bad Jacob. I just wanted to get it washed before it went on the car. Had that damp musty smell to it. Pretty much impossible to avoid when stored in a garage though. No big deal. I'll try washing it this week with a small amount of liquid soap and see if that does the trick. A conventional dryer should be fine for it also right?

Yeah, they dry pretty quick since they are not real heavy material.

I wouldn't let it dry it out completely, just so that it is a tiny bit damp still. Don't want to chance shrinking it.

Never had a problem with shinking with mine and I've washed it about 4 times.

I have a NOAH car cover and I just wash it with it on the car. Works fine.

Re: How to wash car cover?

My fiance washed and dried a car cover I had a few years, and when she pulled it out of the drier, it was melted. With out really knowing, it had plastic fibers in it, and ruined the cover. I'd just let it air dry somewhere.
