How to tell a real 01 SS ?

I know there is a way to tell from the VIN # by a designated number or letter for one of the digits. Can someone tell me how to properly designate a car I'm looking at as a true SS ? Thanks

I just pulled the Carfax which was clean but it did not come up as a SS but as a Z28. So now I'm wondering if he or the previous owner added the SS hood, badges, and spoiler. If so then this guy doesn't know he didn't buy a true SS or has added the SS equipment and is trying to sell it off as a SS.

Don't know about carfax info. VIN# on mine for insurance purposes comes up as Z28/SS. If you have access to the RPO codes on the door look for "WU8".
