Re: How SLOW are automatics?
Well sounds like I should be happy with an auto most of the time all i have ever drove is an manual My thread opinions were in the most general sense.
I love shifting out on the open though!!

Re: How SLOW are automatics?
I have an a4 and have beat m6. But what i think really sucks is that if im going at 31mph and floor it it wont shift into 1st and well youll get smoked if the other car gets into 1st. This happened to me when i raced a 98 cobra with some bolt ons. He got me at about 35 and he intantly put about 1 car lenght since he shifted into 1st, then just staid the whole way like that. But i really like my A4 and im really happy with it.

As far as automatic vs. standard in terms of "speed".......well, unless you know how to drive a stick, ON AVERAGE, autos will do better at the track since there's a lot less room to "mess up" your run. FWIW, I've seen a few M6 LS1's at the track running high 13's, while I've been running consistant mid-low 13's with my auto. This has been with both 2.73's and now 4.10's. BUT, if you can drive stick (like my buddy with an M6 LT1 Z28) then you can run really quick (try 13.775, bone stock) and compete with M6 LS1's!

I have 3.23 factory BUT I have always wondered if someone has changed out the gears. My gas mileage does suck (200 miles per tank) so high gears would do that.

Re: How SLOW are automatics?
Try this gear calculator and see what it says. You may have 3.23's, but if you shift a lot earlier than ~6000 RPM, that'll change the top speed of each gear.

Re: How SLOW are automatics?
I'm confused on this gear calculator. Its telling me what speed I would be going at what RPM in what gear correct? If thats right then whys my car shift into OD at 100mph? I have the pedal to the floor so it should know not to shift yet. It goes right upto redline before it shifts.

Re: How SLOW are automatics?
Well capn pete it seems your are right about those 4.10 gears...I did a little test today and where my gears top out is at the speed that gear calulator says it would be with 4.10s. Kinda crazy, no?
EDIT : I guess I'll have to take off the diff cover and give it a check to be sure.

Re: How SLOW are automatics?
So you're saying you have an A4 w/4.10's too?! Sweet!
Just to confirm, (under light acceleration) your car is probably into 3rd gear by the time you're across an intersection, right? And to cruise around in OD (4th) at about ~70 mph is around ~2800 RPM?
.....if so, then congratulations, you've got the lowest gears that belong in an A4 car!
