how much power am i probably pushing?
how much power am i probably pushing?
ive got a 91 camararo rs with the 5.0 305. my dad tells me it pretty fast for a 305 but i want more plus ide like to know about how much power im probably making now. heres all thats done, 3.73 rear,3" borla exhuast, edelbrock headers, kn filter, had the dual ram air setup but the tubes i had to throw out, short shifter,3" electric cutout, and im pretty sure someone else did some internal work cause i can outrun a mustang gt most of the time. would a power chip be wise, where should i go from here ive got 1000$ to put into the performance side of the car?
Re: how much power am i probably pushing?
well...stock you are running 170hp@4000 255ft-lbs@2400,
assuming headers, exhaust, and a little better flowing intake...you're probably looking at a 20hp increase at best.
the gears will really make the car seem faster.
now if it has internal work there is NO WAY to tell what you're at. you'd probably hear a cam, although a small cam may not be noticable. or they could have put better heads on it.
it's hard to suggest mods for an engine that has mystery mods on it already.
i would suggest a mild cam, and a matched intake manifold. you could pick up something like an LT1 cam for cheap and then stick an edelbrock performer or performer RPM intake on there and make pretty good numbers. the next step would be to have a custom chip burned to match the setup. for that check out www.pcmforless.com
you could also look into a better set of heads, something like the World Products S/R Torquer 305 heads...but those are about $800 for a pair.

Re: how much power am i probably pushing?
You can spend 1200 on heads, cam , intake and tuning for the 305....
or...
spend 1200 on a stock used LT1 and do a simple transplant.
Guess which one I'd choose? I definitely would not put any money into a 305.
The LT1 is a bolt in for your car. There are lots of 3rd gens running around powered by LT1s.

Re: how much power am i probably pushing?
just so yall know im quite happy with my 305, im aware of what it is so i dont need people to tell me its not the best engine ever but any engine can be fast. and for yalls info ive taken a 1993-1997 model z-28 i was barely pulling away from it my motor is by no reason slow. maybe not the fastest but not slow. but thankzz for yalls help.

Maybe your engine is not a 305? Could it be a 5.7 that has been modded with heads and cam? Does it look like it is stock? Is the harmonic balancer a 5.0 or 5.7 piece? are the heads aluminum?
If you are in fact beating LT1 cars there is definitly not a stock TBI305 under your hood. Do some more research, or go to the track and see what it actually runs. LT1 cars run 14.1 stock. Then you can compare.
Re: how much power am i probably pushing?
Agreed, go to the track and post results, then we can at least make an educated guess on what it has done to the motor if anything. Everyone's definition of "fast" is different. Before I got this car, I thought my mom's car was pretty dang quick (new 3.5L Altima). Now whenever I drive it I get bored cuz it seems so slow.
Re: how much power am i probably pushing?
i had a 90 firebird w/ 305 TBI. i had 373's, lt1 cam, edelbrock intake manifold, a cutout on it, and a vaccume fuel pressure regulator. i probably had maybe 230 horses after that. i ran a 14.9 @ 92 at the track, and that isnt even close to lt1 times or power.
Re: how much power am i probably pushing?
my friend has a 2001 mustang with the v6 where should i run in a race with it?i think its got 190 hp stock or 220 not sure wich.
if i was to race it yall think ide win?
not considering anything discussed so far.

Re: how much power am i probably pushing?
A 305 may not be the hottest perfroming thing on the road, but they are pretty torquey to drive around town, and a VERY reliable. From 0-40, these cars are not bad at all. They just run out of steam in higher rpm's. (in stock form) The only mods I have done to my LO3 are a Dynomax catback, and a K&N. I figure it would probably be a mid 16 second car, am I wrong??
Re: how much power am i probably pushing?
i agree with everyone else when i say u are either full of poop, or u definately dont have a 305. i knew a guy with a 305 with heads cam and nitrous and i still beat him in my old 93 camaro with gears..... i am giving u the benefit of the doubt and saying u dont have a 305!
