Well, anyone want to let me know? I've never checked transmission fluid in a T56, and can't find any way to do it? I want to make sure the level is ok, because the transmission "grinds" when cold.

 

Warm up the car. Park on even ground. Pull the dipstick and wipe it off. Put it back in wait a bit and pull it back out and read it.

 

But the T56 is a manual transmission, does it have a dipstick? I've never seen a manual tranny with one...?

 

I know on some transmissions you have to remove a plug and check to see the level is up near the hole.

 

Remove the filler plug, stick a finger in the hole and see how close to the hole it is.

 

But how full should it be?

Yah there is no dip stick. I just can't find any other reason to explain why the transmission grinds when cold, but runs just fine when up to operating temp.

 

it should be just to the bottom of the hole. just be sure to pull the FILL plug and NOTthe DRAIN plug

it can be a bitch to get off, so get ready to be pissed off at it

P.S. Remember the T56 takes ATF.

 

yes, Dex III ATF if it seems you are low, or if you just want to change it.

if you are going to add or change...its a PITA to pour it in that fill plug so leave the fill plug off with something underneath the trans to catch any fluid. Lower car and remove shifter then pour it into there instead. MUCH easier IMO, then when it starts to come out the fill hole you know you have enough

 

Put a hose on a funnel. Stick the hose in the filler hole and you can pour it in from the top.

 

So how many quarts of DexIII should I buy to do a full change?

And do I need to recheck/refill after driving the first time after the change?

I have mine out on the garage floor right now so it's easy to do before I shove the whole shootin' match back in there.

 

It holds eight pints.
