How To Change Clutch Fluid??

I've searched and searched all over the web and can't find anywhere that explains how to FLUSH lt1 clutch fluid..even my Chiltons manual doesn't say.

I've found many writeups on how to BLEED but none about how to CHANGE the fluid completely.

LS1s have bleeders on the bell housing, LT1s do not have bleeders at all. Just a braided cable going from master to slave.

This is all because my pedal has been feeling really squishy lately on the hot summer days. The Ram HDX clutch has about 10k miles on it. The fluid is probably original with 116k miles and its pretty nasty looking.

thanks in advance.

Clutch Fluid Change

Take off the slave cylinder...remove the roll pin that holds the line in and remove the line. Empty out the slave, most of the fluid in the clutch cylinder will drain out through the line that was removed...slowly with your hand..depress the clutch pedal to remove the rest of the fluid from the master cylinder and resevoir. Be very careful not to press the clutch pedal when the slave is hooked up or you will damage it. Reassemble and bleed as instructed on the various threads on here.

Thats the best method i've heard yet. I was staring at that roll pin last night hoping i didn't need to take it out. Though i was hoping not to have to bleed the system, like flushing brake fluid.... forcing the old fluid out with the new fluid..never letting any air in there.

Do you think, using your method, i could have someone pour new fluid into the reservior as i pump the clutch to avoid sucking air in the lines and avoid the bleeding procedure?

You have to bleed.

Once you disconnect the line on the slave you will have to bleed the system without a doubt. Hold the slave cylinder at about 45 degrees and fill it up with brake fluid before you put the line back on it an re-install the pin. Then fill up the resevoir with fluid. Push the bar on the slave cylinder about a inch in and hold it there while someone puts the diaphram and lid back on the resevoir. Then open the resevoir and fill it up with fluid. Make short strokes about a half inch or so to the slave cylinder until there are no more bubbles coming up into the resevoir. Be sure to not touch the clutch pedal until the slave is re-installed in the bell housing.
