Question Horn relay?

There is such thing, right? Where is it located?

The horn in my car is not working and I guess it needs to be working when I go in for inspection...

Fuse is fine and I even changed it to a new one just to make sure, but to no avail. I don't think I want to start digging into the steering wheel too much, though...

So, I guess the only things for me to do is to check the wiring outside the steering wheel and the relay. Where are the horns (there are two of them, right?) located, anyway?

Thanks again, guys!

Lol... Yeah, I know what a relay looks like, but before I start tearing the whole dash apart, I thought I'd check if somebody remembers its location.

Re: Horn relay?

Okay... Changed the relay, but to no avail.

Where are the horns themselves located at? Somewhere inside the nose cone, of course, right?

Re: Horn relay?

They are on the passenger side located kinda in the nose section. Under that plastic guard in front of the air dam.

Re: Horn relay?

The horn switches in the steering wheel are easily accessible when you remove the airbag (four bolts behind the steering wheel). I would suggest you remove the negative terminal off the battery at least an hour in advance to allow the airbag electrical system to fully discharge prior to pulling the airbag off.

Re: Horn relay?

Does the relay "click" when you press the horn button?

If it does, test for power at the horns.

If it doesn't, there is a problem between the relay and the button.

That's just the thing... I really wouldn't like to mess with any of the airbag stuff. But I guess I'll have to...

Nope. Don't hear any clicking, so I guess I'll have start messing with the airbag. :blah:

I wouldnt do that just yet.

Do you have a multimeter or a test light?

the relay will have several terminals on it. there may be a diagram on it showing which terminals do what. Figure out which terminal(s) activate the realy and start testing from there. It may not be necessary to remove the airbag or steering wheel.

Re: Horn relay?

I have a diagram for a 93 TA, should be the same.

Fuse 11 (25 amp) feeds the horns. It should be have 12volt all the time. It also feeds the cigarette lighter. On the horn relay, there should be 3 different wires feeding it. The orange wire should be hot all the time, comes from Fuse 11, should be terminal 1 on the relay. Terminal 2 on the relat will have 12 volt when the horn is activated and is Dark Grn. Terminal 3 on the relay is what activates the relay, this terminal is grounded by the horn switch. You should be able to ground this terminal to test the relay, granted you have 12 volt on terminal 1.

Re: Horn relay?

Thanks for the tips, guys. I'll check into those later.

I went to PepBoys and got me a new horn and wired that inside. Just to get the inspection taken care of. :blah:
