A lift has flat pads that push evenly on the plastic which makes it very strong. A standard jack don't have a flat pad so it will crush the plastic if you are not careful. That is why you can put a piece of wood between the jack and the plastic pad and jack that way.

The Eastwood Company sells inserts for floor jacks.... one with a slot that allows you to use the floor jack on the pinch weld, and another with a flat rubber pad that works great on the black plastic blocks. I have both of them and they work well.
And, ramps made from 2x10's are good for raising the front off the ground so a jack will fit, or for allowing you to get a low nose up on ramps.....

Well, if there's any misunderstandings about the black jack pads, just use the K-member like I do.
And, as a sidenote, when I got my rims put on the guy jacked the car up on both sides (one side at a time, of course) with the black plastic pads.
And my fenders and underbody are just fine to this day.

I have the low profile plastic Rhino Ramps. They do OK (sometimes they slide as the driveway to the garage is painted).
I also went and picked up a low profile aluminum jack. Best $99 I ever spent at Costco! Makes my life so much easier. With my old steel jack, I had to do each side individually.

Use the K-member or the frame rails if you want to do it one side at a time. I haven't used anything other than a lift for a while, but back when I did everything in the driveway I'd use the frame rails and put the jackstands under the inner portion of the control arms.
ever notice how the back bottom of the front fenders stick out a little on many f-bodies... its from jacking it up in the wrong spot. not that my method is probably right but i jack up 1 side at a time from the A arm about 6 inches back from the wheel and ive never had a problem
lol... being the hick that i am... to take all trouble and complexity out of this. use two boards... put them infront of your tires... pull up on them.. 2x4's work but wider is better. dont need to be too long... be careful in grass cause the boards will pop up and hit your fenders if they are too long
