High milage ride

I'm in the market for a new daily driver. I am looking for a CRAZY efficent car one of those that gets at a bare minnimum 40 mpg. My friend has a VW beatle which gets over 50 but I don't like those. I was thinking more along the lines of a VW w/ diesel motor and more sedan like. Perhaps a fox or something. Anybody have any good suggestions.

My plans are to buy an older one for dirt cheap. tear it down and rebuild all the mechanics (engine, drivetrain, brake system, everything) then have it be my main car.

Thanks for the help!

Older VW with diesels are slow as HELL! how much money are you looking to spend? I'd pay more initially and avoide any "tear down"

Re: High milage ride

I don't care about speed. I want EFFICENTCY . I already have one fast car now I need the other extreme of the spectrum. With this one going down the highway that's good enough for me.

Um... well for mechanically sound car 1500$ otherwise well under 1k$. I like tinkering around so a tear down is actually quite enticing to me. Plus I like to know whatever car I have that it is in great condition. With a teardown I can ensure everything is in TOP notch condition. Unfortunately, with any car I have had it normally ends up in peices anyways as I'm overly, obsessed with tinerking. But I might add all of my rides are very well cared for.

Anyways, what's out there w/ extreme high milage besides hybrid. I don't want that. Anybody firmilar with the market/pricing on these sort of cars?

Thanks!
