high beams switch...99 camaro

not sure if this is more of an appearance forum question...but i'll let the mods decide.

i use my high beams about 3 times a year, and the last time i noticed they were difficult to switch on. basically i had to pull on the lever in just the right way. but they worked.

today i tried them and NOTHING. they don't flash, flicker or anything...neither one.

wondering if the switch finally went bad in the steering column.

what would the easiest way to jump the switch to see if it IS that? is there an easy way to follow the wires? how do i jump them to close the switch?

off the top of my head i don't even know if there is a fuse just for the Highs...i'll check that also.

its dark and i don't feel like messing with a flash light...so i'll ask this tonight and see what i can find/learn tommorrow.

Shoebox...i should probably thank YOU in advance

Is it actually clicking when you try to use it? If not, it may be out of adjustment. Once you lower the column down enough, you will see how it works as you pull on the lever.

Easy test is when you pull the lever towards you, do you hear/feel the "click" of the switch? If not, it may be a bad switch, but you mentioned earlier that you only use them a few times a year. That probably leads us to the switch doesn't get used enough to be worn out and I'd guess the linkage that actuates the switch is out of adjustment. With tilt sterring columns, the linkage is pretty wierd and there are a few places you can get a little slop or a bend.

The good news is... there's an adjustment which usually gives you enough adjustment to get it working. The hard part is, it's under the dash mounted to the driver's side of the steering column. You have work your way in there, usually upside down in the seat to get to it. If you look for the mounting bracket that holds the steering column to the dash, the dimmer switch is mounted on the column at about the 10 o'clock position. It is stacked on top of the ignition switch. The holes of the dimmer switch are slotted. Loosen the nuts a little and move it closer to the steering wheel to tighten things up. If you need a picture of the column and dimmer switch, go to shoebox's site and look in the Diagrams/Drawings/Exploded Views and click on Steering Column Exploded View. The Dimmer Switch is #83

I hope this helps you get it working.
