Help Quick!!!
Help Quick!!!
I have my engine removed and the tranny is removed as well. However I need to put it on an engine stand, but I dont have any engine stand bolts. I am renting the engine hoist and this is my second day at 30 dollars a day. I dont want to be charged again for another day and I need some advice on what bolts to use or what bolts will work to support my engine. I dont care if it is a temporary fix only. I just need the engine on the stand.
PLEASE any help would be appreciated.

Re: Help Quick!!!
3/8x16
Ace sells them. Get grade 8s.
Edit: If stores near you are closed, your waterpump bolts are the same size, and may be long enough to use, but ideally, go pick up some of the above size bolts, long enough to get a good hold of the motor.

Re: Help Quick!!!
OMG that was extremely fast! Thanks.
I assume the socket size doesnt matter. As long as they are 3/8 thread and 16" long. Will the bolts work that dont have thread the whole length of the bolt, only about 1" at the end is threaded?
I was just at Ace and didnt see any long ones that were threaded all the way.

Re: Help Quick!!!
3/8x16 is the thread size. Use some washers if you cant find any that are threaded long enough (grade 8s usually have solid at the top of the bolt). I've got 1" spacers on my engine stand for that purpose. You want at LEAST 1" of thread in the motor
Re: Help Quick!!!
3/8x16 is the thread size, then how long of bolts do you use? I dont have the engine stand here. A buddy of mine is picking it up so I can dismantel the engine in time so he can get the correct parts because the parts stores close here in an hour and I need to make sure I have the correct bolts so I can get my engine mounted so this thing isnt costing me an arm and a leg to rent.

Re: Help Quick!!!
Thanks!
I found the engine stand online with some specs.
http://www.hotrod.com/techarticles/53940/index5.html
Looks like the bolt sizes for the enigne stand are...
Fasteners you’ll need for BBC: Four 3-½-inch, 3/8-diameter, coarse-thread bolts
I am going to run to the store again and make sure I get them bolts in time.
THANKS!

Re: Help Quick!!!
I purchased some 3/8x16 3 1/2" long and some 3/8x16 3" long, both grade 8. I will keep ya posted as to which ones worked. I imagine someone else will be wanting this info later on.
Re: Help Quick!!!
I also noticed after removing the engine the following.
1 bolt missing on the top passenger side of the bell housing.
2 bolts on the passenger side of the bellhousing were only hand tight.
many bolts on the tranny were a little tighter than hand tight.
I imagine the clutch was replaced fairly recently because the flywheel looks almost new and the clutch looks brand spanking new. So someone probobly forgot to tighten/input some bolts after installing.
And I was wondering why I had such an oil leak around the rear main.

Re: Help Quick!!!
Well I was able to remove all but 1 stupid bolt on the flywheel. It is rounded off and now I need to find a tool to remove it. What APITA!
I am returning the hoist and will try another day.
