helicoil inserts??

Someone guide me in this helicoil insert area. I have a stripped out hole on my 2001 R6 on a side cover.

So a couple of questions. When you are looking for helicoils, what do you pick for thread size? Do you pick what the bolt you are going to be putting in or do you go bigger so it fills in the striped threads? I assume you go by the bolt that is going to be going in/original threads??

How is there relaibility? Anyone know of a good brand/place to buy these?

Re: helicoil inserts??

You will need to read the instructions, As for reliability, the Aircraft industry replaces standard tapped holes with Helicoil inserts in critial area.

Re: helicoil inserts??

NAPA sells helicoil kits. You want one for the bolt that you're going to install. You will need to drill the hole out just a bit to make it proper size. Then you will need to tap the hole with the proper supplied tap. Once that is done you just use the insertion tool and screw it in. These things are great, actually stronger than original threads. I used them on a headbolt hole in an 84 Z about 5 years ago and it is still running strong today.
