Heater Core

Alrighty, i'm getting a anti-freeze smell through my defrost vents in my 97 Camaro. It leaves resedue on my windshield and only happens when the engine is heated up. There is no visable leak on the passenger side, but like i said i can smell the anti-freeze vapor. I was told this might be the heater core (i'm not running the heater or vents). If anyone else has any other suggestions or ideas they are more then welcome. Also if i should take out the heater core to look at it and see if i can patch it up if need be can someone tell me how to flush the coolant... even if i don't need to can someone still tell me because i would like to know.

Thanks!

Deffinatly your heater core is leaking. Probably best to get it replaced before it leaks on the carpet, or worse you are left stranded. Its not so hard to get out once you get the dash apart but getting it in is where the headaches are. I dont know about paching it, I would think a radiator shop would beable to help you there. You will want to be very careful with the foam around the heater core and the foam in the firewall as well. When I put mine back in I used black AC tape to fill the hole in the firewall.

Hope this helps.

two ways.

1. Drain entire radiator.

2. Get the heater hoses off the core. Place them so the open ends are above the level of the coolant in the core( basically point them straight up and streach them as far as you can without tearing. Some coolant will spill out under the car. This will bring the level in the core down enough to get it out of the car without spilling any( just be reall careful and dont yank too hard, and do not turn so the inlet/outlet is pointed down). Then dump excess coolant into a container.
