Having a key made

Ok I have no key and I called a locksmith, he can make me a door key, but he says theres nothing he can do about the VATS key.

I called a Pontiac deal and they can't make my VATS key cuz its an 89 and too old. Is this gonna be the same problem I hit anywhere?

Re: Having a key made

You can buy a blank key with the VATS chip on it, maybe the dealer can do it then? I think they are the only place who can program it.

Re: Having a key made

buy a blank from the Pontiac dealer? or have the auto locksmith make a ignition key minus the VATS part and have the dealer add that?

Re: Having a key made

assuming the ignition cylinder hasn't been replaced, they can cut you a key based on the win number for $25 or so.

Re: Having a key made

Being a locksmith all I can say is your dealing with idiots. Any decient automotive locksmith can remove the cyl and make a key. Now the catch is does he,she have the proper tools to interigate the computer for the cars VATs value?? That I cant say. As for making a key from the VIN. GM isnt releasing the codes to locksmiths anymore through roadside asisstance they stoped that about 3 or 4 months ago. They used to do it for cars up to 10 years old. Now they wont do any car thats out of warrenty. So good luck, find a guy who works auctions and be prepared to shell out a few sheckles at least $150 of them if its my shop.

So then the best affordable bet is to remove the VATS security and have a lock smith replace the cylinder with a new one and key?
