Gut the cats or remove them?

Gut the cats or remove them?
I was going to just take them off but it looks like it would be a pain to weld pipes in place of them. On ny vette I just took them off but it was easy to weld pipes in the location. What would you guys do?

I gutted the cat on my 84 z-28. I noticed a much deeper sound in the exhaust and it was much easier than welding in a pipe. The best part of it was I just passed inspection yesterday with a gutted cat.

Re: Gut the cats or remove them?
This was one of my first mods I did to my car years ago. Actually started the gutting because someone suggested a symptom could be a clogged cat.
Its easy since it is not welded on both sides, just open the clamp, drop the back, take a long screwdriver and a hammer and start breaking it up, then start the car and rev it up to blow out the pieces while it is hanging.
Then shove a piece of pipe through it for two reasons - 1 it will sound much better. kind of sounded like a tin can when it was empty. and 2 - better flow - I figured it had to flow smoother with a pipe shoved in there than having the air bounce around in there.
enjoy.
Later on, you may find yourself replacing the whole exhaust anyways (like me) but for a $5 mod it was real cool.
