Grinding Noise????

when i have my car idling and in neutral, there is a small grinding noise from underneath the car around where the tranny would be, but when i just hold the clutch in or put it in gear or even when im driving there is no noise at all (no grinding, chattering, or anything). i asked around for a few people's opinions and some are saying that it could be the throw out bearing or even the clutch and pressure plate. can anyone help me figure out what the problem is??

Re: Grinding Noise????

as long as it's fairly quiet...it's normal

i think i've always been told the TO bearing as well.

both my 96 and 99 have had it. and both were under 40k miles when i got them.

if its loud...one of the bearings could be really going.

hm...could have just gotten a little worse to the point that you notice it.

now that i think of it...my 98 did it when i got it.

recently i've replaced the clutch, pp, flywheel, TO bearing, pilot bearing and slave cylinder.

i'm pretty sure it is still audible...then again it's a pretty hefty clutch

Re: Grinding Noise????

I can hear mine quietly too. I always figured it was just the sound of the gears in the transmission spinning. When I push the clutch in it stops.

I dont think it is the clutch. when the clutch is engaged there is really no reason for it to make noise. There is no force on the throwout bearing, the disk is firmly held between the flywheel and pressure plate. There shouldnt be any noise. Typically you hear clutch noise when you press the pedal and disengage it. That is when you put stress on the throwout bearing and the disk can spin freely.

Well know I feel MUCH better now, since I was told this was my input shaft and my tranny will need to be rebuilt. I can hear it slightly too, I've always thought it was just the stuff in the tranny moving since I havy poly transmission mounts and a Pro 5.0.

Re: Grinding Noise????

It is also common and normal for the input shaft on a T56 to make a very slight knocking sound at idle in neutral. I can hear mine do it if I listen very carefully.
