GMHTP Budget Bolt-ons "1.6RR"

Hi, I was reading the March issue regarding best budget bolt-ons and they list 1.6RR for the LT-1 and L-98 but they don't mention changing the stock springs in either case. Did the magazine screw up on this? Most of the posts in the archives regarding 1.6RR state the springs must be changed but their are others who have had no problems after many miles. Could someone tell me the stock valve spring height and coil bind heights. Thanks

I believe they are 2.01" free, and 1.78" installed and closed.

BTW, are you from Lincoln, NE?

Re: GMHTP Budget Bolt-ons "1.6RR"

Thanks for the info. Do you know the coil bind height as well? I have a Mk7 with the 5.0 running a powerdyne and heads that runs 13.00's @ 110+ hence the lincoln8 name along with a 69 440 Cuda. I recently purchased a low milage 95 t-top M-6 z28 and I love the car but a header and high-flow cat install with plugs and wires just set me back 1525.00CA. The rockers I can do myself but if I have to change the springs as well I'll probally pass this upgrade because labor costs will kill me. Thanks again.

No, sorry. But check shbox.com for a lot of good info, you might be able to find it somewhere in there.

Although the magazine makes for a great read, I don't think their product recommendations are the best or the most accurate in some cases.

You might get away with using the stock springs, but I'd at least use the Hotcam springs with them. They're only ~$30 for a set.

I can't remember the specs. You can install 1.6RRs on the intake side and be OK, but the exhaust side is short on lift by about .010 if I remenber right. I've had the 1.6 rockers for ages now and decided to wait so as to not tear up the valve train.
