gauge recalibration

So my car had white faced gauges when i bought it, and a few of the gauges are obviously off, speedo is 3 or so mph off at 65, rpm's run a bit higher(i know that may not be an actual problem), gas gauge is off, etc. Is there any way to try and fix this other than trial and error myself.

Thanks

Re: gauge recalibration

Put a scanner on it to get the correct values for system voltage (PCM will read a little lower than the gauge - but you can also check it at other points on the engine with a volt meter), RPM, MPH, and coolant temp. Compare the scanner reading to the gauge reading, so you know how much you need to move the needles. Oil pressure will be the most difficult, since you would have to connect a mechanical gauge to the engine. Fuel level should be easy, if you remember where the needle used to sit when you filled it up to the top.

Fred do you know how the gauges work? I just had mine off to install the 98+ TA bezel and i think my tank is full and i believe Fuel gauge is reading a little higher than normal. So i pulled the cluster and put it down a little more and when i started the car the gauge went right back up to where it was. While the car was running i pulled the bezel off and turned the needle down and it came right back up. I'm guessing it must just be in my head and fuel gauge must be right.

Re: gauge recalibration

You were removing the needle from the pin to move it, right?

Re: gauge recalibration

No, i wasn't removing the needle. I didn't remove the needle from the pin to begin with when i installed the bezel so i assumed i wouldn't have to now.

Re: gauge recalibration

Im not sure about 1997, but I know that my 2000 auto calibrates, when you plug the gauge pod back in, even without the key in, all the different things max out for a few seconds, then go back to 0 never had to recalibrate...

I think the LT1 guages are auto recalibrating. I thought my fuel gauge was off after i installed my TA bezel but i filled up the car and it was reading right. I just installed my new White face gauge overlays and after i installed them the needles weren't in the same place. I just turned on the key and they reset back to normal.

Re: gauge recalibration

I just did my gauges in my LT1 T/A and my needles didn't reset themselves. My tach was telling me I was idling at 5 grand! I got everything about right though, although my tach is still off about 200 rpm.

Re: gauge recalibration

My 97 auto recalibrates, same year they switched to digital odometer-tripometer maybe that has something to do with it.
