Re: gas smell

It could be either a bad charcoal canister or a hole in the gas tank. Hope for the charcoal canister, it's a fairly non-expensive part, in the drivers side rear fender well behind a plastic panel.

If it smells stronger in that fender well then the pass-side fender well, my vote is for the canister. If it smells the same in both fender wells, probably a leak IMO.

I agree. Also check your fpr for a leek in the diaphragm could back up in the vac hose. How does the car run otherwise?..Just a guess, hope you find the problem.

Re: gas smell

The rubber hose on top of the fuel tank, that connects to the charcoal canister is notorious for rotting and falling apart. You'll get a strong fuel smell if that happens. I noticed it in the passenger compartment when stopped at a light with the driver's window open.

And, does your car have a cat? If not, the exhaust is going to smell of fuel.
