gas gauge wrong after fuel pump install
gas gauge wrong after fuel pump install
I had a buddy replace my fuel pump since it went out. That evening I took it for a ride and my gas gauge said quarter tank, but my car died..ran out of gas? It runs good now and I fill it up often, but I'm worried that my gauge is wrong/broke when it gets down to quarter tank?... I'm afraid to run it down to quarter tank or even close now? Any suggestions or ideas would be appreciated!
Thanks in advance!

Re: gas gauge wrong after fuel pump install
Same thing happened to me only not quite so severe. I had someone replace my pump and they apparently didn't get the sender set correctly. I ran out of gas at 1/8 tank. Bad thing to do to a new pump! I shouldn't have run it that low any way since those always running high pressure pumps heat themselves up and being submersed in gasoline is necessary to keep them young.
I basically start looking for fuel at 1/2 on the gauge now. You need to do the same thing. Fixing the sender in the tank is a big job although cutting a trap door to access the pump and sender is one option.
Be sure to change your filter regularly as this is probably the reason my pump worked itself into the grave.
I had considered moving the dial on the gauge seeing how it goes way above full when the tank is filled but am a little afraid of doing that.

Re: gas gauge wrong after fuel pump install
The float arm is probably catching on the line that goes from the pump to the metal lines. You have to make sure that it'll clear that or it will stop going down when it hits it keeping the gauge from registering any lower than that point. I recommend the trap door in your case. Either way, you have to get the pump assembly back out to fix the problem.
