Gains from basic bolt-ons
there was a website that stated this infor but i dont remember where it is, just looking for quarter mile gains from...
- k&n cai
- flowmaster cat back
- lt headers
- 3.73 gears in a A4
- free mods
- tuning when said and done
I know flownmasters dont have the best gains if at all, but i love the sound. Also wondering is it a waste of money buying those ebay cai kits that just use a K&n filter with there own piping? Also, the breathing mods, how much better if any, did you guys notice your mpg? My budget for my car is 2000, does this look like a good way to spend it? Any thing i missed?

Re: Gains from basic bolt-ons
if you have tires you can drive it to a 12 second run no problem
I've always noticed an increase with breathing mods yes. That is definetly a good way to spend your money, you will have the supporting mods for a future cam swap as well.
Personally I'd go with a name brand rather than an Ebay CAI. Ebay CAIs look like they don't suck in much cold air. They suck more yes, but it's much warmer.

Re: Gains from basic bolt-ons
The K&N CAI kits are fine for your LT1, try looking at a major parts place before buying anything off ebay. Thunderracing, LS1speed, TByrne Motorsports...
As far as gains... IF you really like the flowmaster, go w/ it... it's your car..
- k&n cai ~10hp
- flowmaster cat back ~10-15hp
- lt headers ~15-30HP (depending on application)
- 3.73 gears in a A4 ~ no HP gains just different accaleration... SOTP feel
- free mods ~10hp
- tuning when said and done ~20hp
These are guesstamites.... The $$$ sounds about right, but I wouldn't throw gears in a stock 10b... a good 12b will run about 2g's

With those mods, you should be in the mid 13s easily. With a stall and good tires, you should be in the 12s. Those mods. are a good way to spend 2000 grand in my opinion.

Re: Gains from basic bolt-ons
check out some of GM high tech performance articles about the "grape of wrath" they track tested a bolt on only emissions legal lt1 z28 and got into the high 12's when it was all said and done. if you dont have emmissions laws where you live this very possible. they also let you know exacty how much they spent and what got the best results

What is a "10b" vs. a "12b"? So if I want to put in 3.42 or 3.73 gears I would need a 12b?

Re: Gains from basic bolt-ons
10b = 10 bolt rear end = holds up to nothing
12b = 12 bolt rear end = almost bulletproof
The 10 bolts in our car is known to break really easy. You can put 3.42 and 3.73 in a 10 bolt. Its just that the 12 is much more reliable.

Re: Gains from basic bolt-ons
Well as others have seen, he is most likely talking about his 10bolt a4(thus the need for a cai). The rear end gets preloaded before launching. Yes you M6 guys will destroy your rear end in no time but us A4 guys can take these into the 11's without sweatin. Some people are in the 10's with a stock rear.
A cai will not give you 10hp unless you mean bhp. Id wait on the gears and get a torque converter say 3000k- 3200k stall.
By the way dude, the numbers are not what is important, its the ET you come back with from the track. You could have a 350rwhp car and not break into the low 12s if you cant drive.

Re: Gains from basic bolt-ons
Also, one thing to remember is that the gains listed are NOT cumulative - meaning that you can't just add the numbers in Bayer's post above. To take that post as an example, you're not going to end up with 65 to 85 more horsepower - it'll probably be more like 40 add'l hp...
(Although we all wish that it was cumulative!!)

Top 10 Budget L98 Bolt-Ons;
Top 10 Budget LT1 Bolt-Ons
I'm a little dubious about a couple of their choices (I suspect that magazines are primarily interested in selling ad space), but it seems to be right along the lines of what you're asking.
Hope it helps!
