Fuel Pump... Hard to install? 94 Z

I am having trouble with my car starting. It runs fine but is a pain in the *** to start. Most people thinks its the fuel pump. So Im goning to see if a new one will fix my problm. Something worth mentioning... I started bein tough to start immediately after I got my computer reprogrammed my Ian at MAD Z. Ian even seemed to think that it was the fuel pump. So my question is... Are they hard to swap out? Is there anything that I need to watch out for other than the fuel itself? I assume its in the gas tank. Iv never done this before and dont want to make any common mistakes if I can keep from it. What do ou guys think?

Its a 94 Z (auto) Most all available bolt-ons

I second the trap door idea, very painless compared to dropping the tank from underneath.

thanks for the help. How big is the gap between the part you cut and the top of the pump or tank? Is it pretty easy to cut into the fuel pump or the cut the top of the gas tank?

A few things I would kinda want to know before doing this:
1. What is a nice clean way to cover the hole back up? Hinges?
2. Cutting bits? I know a lot of home mechanics have dremels. What cutting edge was used?

I CAREFULY drilled a hole and then used hand shears (tin snips) to cut out the square. I used an aluminum peice and rtv sealent to cover ther whole along with a few self tapping screws. Its not that bad to do. Good luck.

I too have used the trap door method and it only took about 1 hour. I used an inline air shear to cut the hole. Very quick and clean. For the cover, I cut a piece of sheet metal about an inch bigger than the hole and used silicone and sheet metal screws to hold it in place.

I did it this way also. But, I didn't cut the back side (closest to the front of the car). I just folded the door up and then used flat steel holed things (I can't remember what they're called) to screw it back down and RTV'd the gap.

Shouldn't you confirm the pump is bad before doing messy drilling and or cutting? There are many things than can cause that, as I just "fixed" mine.

I agree with the above comment. There are a few things that can cause the hard starting symptoms. Fuel leaking in the cylinder from a leaking injector. Most likely it's the pump though . My car started taking way too maney cranks to turn over one day. It would run fine after it was started but if I let it sit for over an hour it would again take a long time to start. I was told that there is a check ball in the pump, a sort of one way valve that was not sealing letting the fuel pressure drop when it was sitting. The long cranking time was due to the fuel needing to be brought all the way from the tank to the rail.

That is exactly how I did it. I wrapped tape around the drill bit to prevent going too far and possibly hitting the gas tank. Air powered shears would probably be a cleaner way of doing this, but the tin snips worked fine.
