Formula and Trans am weight?

Just curious as to what the difference in weight the LT1 Trans am and Formula may have if someone was looking to buy between the two. I have a buddy that can't decide which one he wants and he decided to make his mind up on what the weight difference is funny enough. I know the TA just has ground effects and I can't see them weighing much more if any, but I figured I'd ask.

Re: Formula and Trans am weight?

Ground effects, high rise hatch, and power seats are the only differences. Probably less than 100 pounds.

Re: Formula and Trans am weight?

my car is 3520 with 1/2 tank of gas and a n20 bottle and 6 point steel roll bar. As far as the seats not all TA have Power seats. I bet with the same amount of fuel in it, It would be less than 10-20 lbs. So I don't think I would judge off that. I would go with what looked better to him. Only bad thing about a Trans Am no one can mistake it for a V6.

The high rise spoiler was an extra cost option, even though i never saw a t/a without one. I fdunno if they forced you to oredr it with the t/a package. But on the window sticker on my 95 it was an extra cost of like 2-300 bux i beleive.

Re: Formula and Trans am weight?

I'm not sure about the LT1's but my good buddy has a 2002 Formula that has leather seats, T-tops, traction control, and power everything. Basically it has everything except the ground effect pieces and the high rise spoiler that the TA has. I can't see the bodywork stuff adding up to anything more then 100 pounds. Nothing that will make a big difference. The T-tops are heavy. If you can find a hardtop Formula with cloth seats I think then the weight difference of everything combined would start to matter.

Mine is a bare-bones Formula, the only thing power is windows and locks, Cloth manual 4-way seats, fiberglass hood, no GFX or large spoiler, base 4-speaker stereo.

Although mine has a little other trick up it's sleeve being a WS6.

Re: Formula and Trans am weight?

So I see a few 100 pound reponses and a couple 300+ pound difference responses. Anyone have any sites or anything showing curb weight of the two cars, cause if they formula some how miraculously actually weighs even close to 300 pounds less, that is insane but also definatly worth the decision to go with it over the TA anyday if you are looking for a car with poise, such as light weight with a 6 speed for both road racing and drag racing. If the formula actually weighs that much less, im sure he'll get the formula but I'd also actually think about going ahead and selling my TA for the 96 WS6 formula that's had me drooling since I first seen it up for sale.

Re: Formula and Trans am weight?

My 97 T/A was 3660 with about a half tank of gas on CAT certified truck scales.

Go spend $8 bucks at a big truckstop and get your car weighed. This is a lot better than guessing, if the weight thing is really getting to you.
