First steps of pulling engine(LT1)?

Could anyone tell me what would be some major first steps in pulling and LT1? Or maybe even a list of things to do. I know this is asking alot but maybe someone could point me in the right direction.

Also I have no lifts in my garage can the engine be pulled out through the engine bay or does it have to be dropped from the botom?

either way you do it, you don't need to have lifts, i did it from the bottom twice, and it was very easy, i used this site as a guide-
http://www.michiganspeed.com/enginepull/index.html
you can figure out some diff ways of doing it w/o the cherry picker also, i didn't use one when i did it. Either way you do it, most of the stuff from the front has to be disconnected/removed, couldn't tell you exactly cuz i just looked at the engine and started pulling s**** off until it was all clear.

Re: First steps of pulling engine(LT1)?

a lil advice i will give you is dont pull the wireing harness off the motor, take out the computer and find the group of wires goes into/thru the fire wall on the Pasg. side of the engine bay. Then look inside the car and disconect them so you can pull them thru to the engine bay,

Next if i was you i would start with the exhaust/trans crossmember/drove shft all that stuff under the car.

I lefted my car up and suspended it on cinderclocks with jackstands on top of them.

when i was ready to have the engine drop down i just lowered the car so i could put a few jacks under the kmember/trans/motor the used them to suport it as i unbolted the last 6 bolts that hold her in the car then slowly lowered the engine to the ground and then lifted the frame off the motor the rest of the way.

It was pretty easy, just tok me alot of time because i could only work on it a few hours a day

Mark and identify everything you disconect, so you will know what it is. This the FIRST step before you even pick up a wrench.

Would it be easier to pull motor when doing cam/head swap then doing it with motor in car? What about when putting on headers?

if your gonna have the heads and exhaust manifold off i would just pull the motor out the top it really isnt that much more work.

If you are gonna do heads, cam, and headers at once it might be worth dropping the motor out the bottom.

If you pull it out, might as well get an aftermarket k-member if your budget allows. I don't have one of those, but I've heard they are great and well worth it.

I'm planning on dropping mine out later this year and doing cam/k-member/AC Delete/PS Delete/Madman Rack/Plugs & Wires & Delteq/Taking care of leaks/etc.... all in one big shot.

i agree with not disconnecting the wiring harness, pull it with the engine, and i saw a picture of an engine removal once (out the bottom) where they left the y-pipe on, so that is also an option.

Yeah leave the wiring harness on the car, you can leave the headers and ypipe on too. I have a pic or two of my motor swap on the 3rd page of my sig and i left those things on my car. The only real thing i would plan on doing is getting your AC drained incase you have to unhook the lines you won't waste anything.

I s'pose there are tons of "might as well's" out there. These guys will get you into a $10,000+ project if you let 'em.

I think I'd make sure I had a manual first, labeling things is good too.

Re: First steps of pulling engine(LT1)?

whats this about the aftermarket kmember, and why pull the computer, as opposed to disconnecting the wires?

Re: First steps of pulling engine(LT1)?

Can the entire suspension come down on the kmember with the engine? My idea is to leave the engine on the k member and do the head cam swap headers at the same time and then put it back up there.
