Fan motors

I noticed today my 98's fans were making a noise. They tried to come on for a second but went off. Do you have to replace the whole fans or is it just the motor?

Re: Fan motors

The motors may be replaced by themselves.

Re: Fan motors

See I drove the car today and the radiator boiled over, even though the car temp did not register it being hot. Didnt boil over that much, but I heard the fans making a horrible whining and then shut off. So I am guessin the motors are bad?

Re: Fan motors

Tried turning them by hand, looked for anything making them bind up? Strange it would boil over and not register on the gauge - ECT sensor/connection maybe? Just guessing, would be weird IMO if both motors went bad at the same time...

It boiled out of the water resevior, didnt boil out at the radiator cap. The fans were whirring real loud and just stopped.

Re: Fan motors

Yeah I think I will do that first. Never know that coulda been the problem. Would the radiator boil over without the car getting hot? Because the guage showed the car not to be hot, HOWEVER it boiled over when the car was running at a stop. I filled it up with water, and drove her home and it didnt boil over again??

Re: Fan motors

It did sound like it was bubbling though, however when I took the cap off, it didnt SPEW out like it normally does on an overheated car

That is a good indication the cap is bad (if it bypasses into the reservoir when the temp is not very high).

Re: Fan motors

Do the cap first - but the fans shouldn't make a "horrible whining" sound.
