Fan Mod Switch

I installed the fan switch mod perty close to the directions posted on fbody.com. I connected a wire directly to the blue fan wire in the fuse harness under the hood, and then another wire to the fuse box on the side of the dash under battery, (i did connect it first to the ignition like it said, but then my gauges fuse blew and my car wouldn't start). And then a third wire to grounding because the switch i used has a light. The processess worked well until i turned my a/c on, then the switch poped and started smoking and is dead now. Where did i go wrong, what would cause this to happen, i know it probably has to do with the A/C being on, but then how can i go around this?

You need to show a link to the directions you used. There are many different ways to do it. It sounds like you applied voltage to the relay control wire that is supposed be controlled by ground. I hope you did not burn up anything important.

Better check your wiring. Personally, I don't like that method. Directly switching power to the fans and bypassing the relays is not very safe, IMO. Too many ways you can cause yourself problems.

Whats happens if you wire it straight to the fans avoiding the relays. When the relay opens its 12 volts the same if you wire it direct right??? I wired sportbikes that way for years and never had a problem. I know different thing but just wondering.

Because you have to route a power wire that carries a lot of current into the passenger compartment and then have to put a switch on it (plus the switch has to be robust enough to handle the current). If the 12v wire grounds out anywhere, it's a problem.

Using the relays, all you have to do is run a small gauge wire that gets grounded when you throw the switch. Much safer (works basically just like the factory setup) and no real problem if the wire accidentally gets grounded out.

Understand the point now. More safe that way.
