Exhaust welding

I have an exhaust leak at my header collectors (they're slip-on). I need to find an exhaust shop that can weld the collectors on, which any shop can do with the headers off the car. However, I'd like to find aomeone who has the right welding equipment that will allow them to reach into the tight area and weld the collectors by just loosenming the headers from the heads. It seems most shops are not equiped to do this. Is there any special welding tips, equipment that will allow someone to reach the tight spots? If so, what is it called? I'd like to be able to call a shop and ask one simple question to see if they have the equipment rather than explanin it over and over what I need done.

Thanks.

Re: Exhaust welding

I welded flanges on my LT's which were a slip fit with the y-pipe with them on the car. Any exhaust shop should be able to do it, i didnt need any special tools. I wouldnt weld the two together, you wont be able to take your exhaust off.

I assume you are talkin about LT's after looking at your sig.

Re: Exhaust welding

I have flanges for the collector to y-pipe connection, it's the primaries to the collector that leaks like a siv. I've tried high-temp silicone for years, but it only limits the leak. There is no way to get the silicone into the hard to reach spots. The first place I took my car to could not weld in the tight quarters. They said they would have to basically uninstall the headers to weld the collectors to the primaries. There has to be some small welding equipment for getting to the tight spots right?

Oh, sorry I read it wrong. I woul just try to find a reputable exhaust shop or maybe one that does a lot of custom exhaust work.

Probably have to take it in and have them look at it, but it sounds like you have already done that.

Re: Exhaust welding

I've taken it in to one place, but I can't afford the time to drive it to every shop until I find someone who can do it. I'd like to be able to just call and ask "Do you have a "whatever type" welder to weld in tight spots?" over the phone and just take the car to whoever has the equipment.
