Engine whines like it has a blower

My lt1 has developed a whining sound that goes up & down with RPM, sounds like I'm running a blower or maybe a gear drive which I'm not. Any ideas??

Or possibly transmission if you have an automatic..... Mine did that for a year and a half before it exploded Hopefully its just your p/s pump unless your looking for an excuse to build a better trans.

Thanks Guys, but why do you think it's the PS pump and not one of the other belt driven accessories: alternator, AC compressor? I've heard that bearings in these items also whine. Not the tranny, it's a 6 speed.

6 speeds can still whine but they dont sound like a supercharger. when an ac compressor bearing goes it sounds like a tin can of marbles being swirled around. when an alternator bearing goes it either locks up or has a reaaaally high pitch squeal.

hydraulic pumps( power steering, or auto transmission) often make noise. Mine makes noise too, if its not leaking or pissing you off that much just leave it.

listen to any older ford car(taurus, grand marquis, mustang) all have horrible issues with power steering pump noise.

probably p.s pump but it could also be the alternator, it happened to me and everyone thought the car was supercharged haha.

does the whining increase/decrease depending on if the wheels are turned or not? if it whines more at full lock its almost definitly the power steering.

Did you put a spray-on belt dressing on your serpentine belt?
If you did, it could be that.

Just see if it gets louder when you go around a corner. If it does, it's gotta be the power steering pump. I know mine makes noise in my Z and sounds like a supercharger. Goes up and down with RPM just like you say yours does.

Just wondering, I had the water pump replaced last summer and as you know it's gear driven, could these gears be making this sound like a timing gear drive set does
P.S. No belt dressing ever, sound seems to be unconnected to steering movement.

my new alternator whines... you can remove the small plug on the alternator and start it up on just battery... if it stops whining that's it.

not sure if this is normal... never noticed it before, got new exhaust etc and put new alt on car and now it whines a little.
