Easy way to put in backing plates
Easy way to put in backing plates
i need to put backing plates on my car. its an lt1 rear end, fully assebled with no plates, is there an easy way to puttin the plates on or do i have to take apart the gears?! and any tips on how to take apart and put these back together would be great.
Re: Easy way to put in backing plates
It is realy easy. All that you need to do is open up the rear and pop the 'C' clips off of the axelshafts (use some needle nose pliars and just pull them off). Then slide the axelshafts out of the rear. Finally, just bolt the plates on. Then put it back together. it really is cake. Hope that helps

A little more detail on that . . . the pinion pin should be pulled from the diff by removing the 5/16 head bolt on one end of it. Turn the diff with the cover off and you'll see it. Then slide the pin out (mine needed a little coaxing) and then the axles can be pushed in and the c-clips pulled with needle nose or a magnetic pick up. Carefully slide the axles out (so as not to damage the seals) -- you'll need about 4' of clearance on each side of the car (if the rear is in the car?). Toughest part was refilling the rear with fluid. Oh, yeah, gotta remove the calipers (2 bolts each) and rotors before yanking the axles, not sure if they are already off or not.
