Drivers side window actuator
Drivers side window actuator
I have a 1993 Camaro with automatic windows. I have owned it since 2003. For some reason I keep losing the Drivers Side window actuator (motor). I have checked out the switch, OK, swapped out the 30 amp breaker, unwrapped the door window wiring harness all the way to the fuse panel. No shorts or breaks in the insulation on the wiring. I replaced it the first time in 2004 at that time I replaced the entire window arm assembly. It is still in good shape. I then replaced it in April this year, June this year warranty, last Friday on warranty. Could it just be a fluke that I got 2 bad motors? Has anyone had this problem before?

This will probably get moved-
But in the meantime- the motors are trying to push up some of the biggest windows put in any car. They are known to fail, and the Chinese versions aren't any better. The reason they fail is the thermo-sensor trips really easily and slows the window motor down trying to keep the motor cool. Do a search and you will find how to take apart the window motor and by-pass it so they won't quit working. The different sides will say its unsafe since the window will continue to try and go up as long as you are pushing the button.

I'm on the side of the fence that thinks removing the thermal limiter is a bad idea. The limiter is there for a reason, if it's drawing too much current it trips, instead of melting wires. If it's tripping and the motor seems to be fine something in the guides or lift is probably binding causing the motor to work harder. Try cleaning it up realwell with some degreaser and then reapplying some lithium grease liberally. Also the $20 aftermarket motors just aren't as good as the OEM ones.
window motor
I have been buying them from the Chevy dealer for 56 bucks. They replaced the last 2 on warranty. I clean the rails and relube each time. The rails are in good shape and so are the rollers. Just wondering if others had the problem. I shouldn't bitch. The car has 200,000 miles on it. I just like it and try to keep it in good shape. Nothing special. Totally stock 6 banger. Good daily driver. Thanks for the info.
They are crap motors. Advanced or Autozone has lifetime warranty replacements. I bought 1 of those and its been the best investment. Anytime 1 of the motors go out i just take the receipt in and get another. I've changed maybe 5 or 6 of mine and a few dozen on the side from people who didn't want to do the job themselves.
The last few I've gotten from Advanced seem to be stronger. I have a feeling they will last a lot longer.
