Driver Side Window

Hello all,

I'm new to this site, so please excuse my ignorance, but I have a Question about my drivers side window. It won't go down or up, it started getting slow before I rebuilt the motor (LT1) not the window motor. However now the dang thing won't even move, and the passenger side is "slower than a snail in a snow storm" so my question is this what is the problem, and what is the cheapest way to do it? thanks alot

95 patriot red A4 stock except maf screen removed, nice car
parked in garage now for the winter

Re: Driver Side Window

i had the same thing on my passenger side window. what happens is the motor and window components get old and moving parts get filled with dirt and wear down making the window harder to move. our window motors are designed so that if they meet any resistance they stop like if u got ur hand caught in the window when someone was tring to close it. there's a metal "fuse" kinda in the motor that heats up and prevents the motor from working.i took mine apart and took out the "fuse" so it'll keep on working even though it's meeting resistance. Go hot rod ur window motor there was a site that had a really detailed description of what to do. i forget where it was. i might have found it on brents site but i forget mabye someone will know it. it took me 30minutes and saved me a window motor.

Re: Driver Side Window

Won't shorting the resistor cause the motor and wiring to heat up and possibly melt when the window reaches the full up or down position and your finger is still on the button? Or are you careful not to do this?

Removing the safety stop "resistor" from the window motor is dangerous because it could cause death or serious injury to someone who go caught in it. Imagine a child leaning out the window and puting his knee on the switch to cause the window to go up. Ouch. Not pretty. It's not worth the risk.

I recommend fixing it "the right way" by replacing the motors. They are $50.00 each at most discount auto parts stores and install in an hour.

Re: Driver Side Window

Its really alot easier than you think to replace the motor. I didnt think that I was going to be able to replace mine, but after I started on it, it was pretty easy to do. Just dont make the mistake of drilling out the wrong rivets. I drilled out one that held the whole "frame" for the window. After you take the door panel off you should be able to see the motor inside the door, its not as easy to get to as you would think. You actually have to drill two holes (one of the rivets should be accessable already) within your inner door pannel to gain access to the motor rivets. Drill out the three rivets, remove the motor. After you do that the rest is easy. The new motor will come with bolts so you wont have to worry about the rivets. Stick your door panel back on and your done.

So are these the same steps you would take everytime you replace the motor? These rivets are drilled out everytime or just the very 1st time the
motor is replaced?

Just the first time. Once you drill them out, you replace them with nuts and bolts. It makes it that much easier the second time.

Call it "eternal optimism"

It's not a question of "if". It is a question of "when".
