this might sound stupid, but are the doors on our cars made out of metal or plastic of some sort. the reason i ask is becuase the paint has chipped off in a few small areas and it almost looks like fiberglass underneath. really confused me.

the door skin is made from plastic, only metal is the rear quarter panel and hood. assuming ur talking about 4th gens.

Not plastic. Fiberglass.

 

It's actually SMC (Sheel Molded Composite) but it is baisically fiberglass, just a slightly different process.

 

SMC (Sheet Molded Compound). If that is what they are calling fiberglass these days, then that is it.

My hood is fibreglass; or SMC; or plastic. It is not steel.

 

Well we're really slicing hairs here, but this is not the same old fiberglass like the Vettes used to be made of. Yes it is fiber reinforced plastic (Sheet Molded Composite). The plastic component is the part thats different. This is a thermo. plastic not the old fiberglass resin. Unless I'm reading the wrong books, of course.
