Dohc Ls1????

Tried searching, it helped a little..sum guy wanting to put a NorthStar in a Camaro.....

Of course everything is possible w/ $$$$....But, Bolt pattern, cyl. diameter ...etc....I think this would tach like crazy, flow like crazy, and make some serious top-end power.. Is there a head out there that will fit an LS1?? What are the specs of the Norhtstar motor or other DOHC motors??? My uncle P+P'd the head on his Caddie N.S. and he said it felt like 50 extra HP! GM should seriously concider this!! But use a timing CHAIN...

It's not rice in my book. DOHC's typically have massive flow #'s when given some "lovin"....Strap a blower/turbo on top of that and OMG!!! I think it'd be sweet. Our 16 valve motors are great, but imagine the posibities.........I'd hate to do a timing chain/belt on it tho...

Re: Dohc Ls1????

One of the reasons this never happened is to keep costs down so the price of the cars would still be within reach of buyers looking for F-bodies.

GM has already "been there - done that" with DOHC V8's back in the early 90's.

I believe I was reading this magazine called "Camaro's" and they mentioned in it that a shop, that makes custom top ends for all sorts of engines was making a DOHC conversion for the LS1..

they showed a small picture of it, and thats all.

Re: Dohc Ls1????

There's really no need for a DOHC LS1, in my opinion.

Cadillac uses DOHC V8s, but when they wanted to give the CTS-V some firepower, what did they use? The LS6.

GM has always made durable, powerful and awesome pushrod motors. When someone wants a motor with some ***** to put in their project car, ocean cruiser, lifted truck, etc. the choice is usually a GM V8.

I was unaware that GM had tried this in the early 90's..I was hardly a teen at the time...

True, and true. I was inquiring mostly about a fabricated but reliable DOHC head conversion. The LS6 is an awesome and VERY impressive motor!! Unfortunatly I will probably not see one for the next 15 years, drop in price, more avalibility. I love the GM Engines, the newer (98-2k2-ish) 4.3L Vortech's are a powerhouse, IMO, I've driven a dozen or so. I've allways had a weakness fore the smallblock and fantisized about the BIG Block 572...

I agree, most of the project cars (GM) I've personally followed have had smallblock GM V8's.......
87 GMC Jimmy 350 w/ carb...71 Chevelle w/ 400SBmabie 402?)...68 Firebird w/ that 6.6L again...68 Nova 383 w/ carb....97 Trans-am LT1 450 hp......71 Camaro w/ Vette TPI 350.....87 Camaro w/ 383 TBI.....The list goes on....
I was born into a world of bowties!.... ....

OH! One more...My uncle's 69 or 70 Trans am. My earliest recolection of life. I must have been NOT even 4 y/o.. I was in the back seat and I remember looking out of the t-tops and hearing th motor roaring....I must have been in a car seat.... I love that memory!!

Hmm...LT5, eh?? That's a nasty sounding motor. I like the Valet switch idea, keep it for the kids! That Vette must boogey! Thanx for the info!...Not sure if i'd want to mess w/ the timing chain on that monster...

yea, the ZR1 was pretty much untouchable in the early/mid 90's. You look at it now, and the LS6 does just as good, if not better than the LT5. Hell look at the LS7 thats about to come out.

I love Quad Cam V-8's (I own 2 of em), but GM's magic with the pushrod engines is hard to beat.
