DO I have a police chase car?

I was getting ready to change the burnt out brake light on my '97 Z and when I unscrewed the light assembly, I saw something that threw me for a loop....
My tailights have the sockets and wiring for strobes. I started to think and remembered that that the police Z28's had strobes in their lights. Whoa....tell me I have a Z set up for a police chase car!

Does anyone else's tailights have these strobe sockets and wiring?
If this is unique, is there any special code on the vehicle reg # that might identify it as set up for a police car?

Come to think of it, my Z does have a factory wiring for some sort of communication antenna near the top of the rear windshield...on the glass. Don't know if this is stock as well.

BTW: Why would you want a B4C (Police) Camaro?
Those guys drive the **** out of those cars, and when they aren't moving they are on the side of the road idling. A B4C Camaro isn't anything special, and there isn't a difference performance wise is a B4C/Z28/SS

The myths you have most likely heard aren't True.

Where do I find this "option B4C" on the car?
I bought the car from an owner who bought it new. He works at a bank...don't think he was a cop before that.

Look in the glove box, or on the side of the inner door, there will be stickers with codes. If you have a the code "B4C" thats a police fleet car, else... Normal Z28. BTW: To the best of my knowledge the B4Cs didn't have Z28 Badges... does you car?

Re: DO I have a police chase car?

I opened the glovebox and didn't see any stickers or stamps on the sides. I dropped the glove box all the way down and on the back of it I found this stamped...

BG4T-M.V.G.R.

I triple checked the numbers, especially the "G" in case it was a "C", but it sure looks like a "G" to me. The car was made in Canada by the way.

What's the difference between the police version and the stock Z28?

Re: DO I have a police chase car?

some firefighter "whackers" go overboard with lighting and other such stuff. the strobes were probably from a volunteer fireman, same with the aftermarket antenna. my buddy had a 88 gt with almost every blue light and strobe known to man on his car. liked like a k-mart blue light special gone mad.

Look on the driver's door as the other location suggested. That's where the RPO sticker is on the later models.

Re: DO I have a police chase car?

OK, I did notice a label with a BUNCH of 3-digit numbers on it. I'll also do a VIN check to see what info that tuens up. Wish me luck!

Those 3 digit [RPO]codes are what you are looking for. They should be listed in alphabetical order. There is nothing in the VIN that breaks down for police service identification. The B4C RPO code is what indicates that.

Re: DO I have a police chase car?

I got to a site that listed the codes for my year car ('97). Aside from the codes for cosmetic stuff here's what my car has. Keep in mind that this is an A4 tranny...

GU5: Rear end ratio of 3.23:1
G80: Positraction w/Limited Slip Differential
KG9: 140 Amp Generator

All other codes seem like "normal" codes for the car....nothing on site listing the code identifies "Police Fleet Vehicle" or similar.
Reading all the posts about the LT1 A4 having a 2:73 rear end, is mine a special one? Do the standard Z28's come with limited slip posi traction?

Finding out I have a taller rear end and posi traction just saved me a bunch of money since I was headed to the rear end for mods. Now I don't have to....
I thought the car pulled unusually hard for a 2:73 rear end.... KOOL!!!!

Re: DO I have a police chase car?

Nope, not special, sorry to burst your bubble - automatics came with either 3.23 or 2.73, seems to be about an even number of each out there. Positrac LSD is also standard. Just another Z28!!

Re: DO I have a police chase car?

The rear axle ratio for the A4 was determined by the "options" that were installed on the car when it left the factory. The "base" Z28 A4 came with 2.73 rear axle ratio. To get the 3.23 gears, you had to check off the "performance rear axle ratio" box on the order (GU5). It cost $300 in 1997.
