Disturbing banging sound

Every time i step on the gas, i hear this sound from under my car. Sounds like some crazy kid beating a pan with a wooden spoon. The harder i step on the gas, higher the rpms, the louder it gets.

My heat shield on my intake manifold was making some sound a few months back but nothing as loud as this. Anyway, it was taken off so its not that. Also, the rattling from the intake manifold area had nothing to do with how hard i accelerated.

Car is driving "normal" or i should say "the same as it was before".

Could this have anything to to with the catalytic converter i hope?

Check the heat shield on the cat...... Or it might be the exhaust pipe bouncing on the crossover bar.......

As mentioned above, it could be a number of things. When I first got my car, it was the intermediate pipe that was banging on the rear axle under load.

Possibly motor mounts. Also look at your harmonic balancer to see if the rubber is dried out. Take the belt off and see if there is any play in the balancer itself.

Just to add a little to the story. In January, i had some work done by some mechanic i'd never been to because my mech friend wasnt available to look at it. They replaced my dist/cap/rotor, oil sending unit. When i got the car back, it was making some rattling sounds much louder than it used to. Rpm's were fluttering, car was hesitating forward slightly.5 days later, after no previous tranny issues, my transmission went out. Car only drove in reverse. Brought it back to them, they fixed it and when i got it back, i got the current symptoms: Car making rattling sounds when under load. It did it this morning on my way to work. I just drove home and the sound wasnt there.

I'm bringing it to my friend this weekend. He said last week after briefly looking @ it that the sound is probably something with the catalytic converter and if im not mistaken he said it might have something to do with the power loss too. I've been contemplating dumping the car for a long time now but i think i'm really close to having all the issues fixed. After i get it back from my mechanic friend, i'm gonna sea foam it to see if i get any improvements.

One thing. If i have a bad catalytic converter, what should i do. It is an emissions thing right? No emissions in florida so do i even need it? Are there other options? I dont know much about the mechanics of a car(what parts do what) other than the basics. I've read a little bit about replacing the cat with a test pipe. What effect will that have on the car (performance/sound/good/bad)

Thanks for all the replies guys!!
